Prince Edward County land and farms appeal to investors, developers, sportsmen and homebuyers due to its low wages, good transportation access, rural living with vast natural resources and access to cultural, sporting and entertainment provided by two colleges. Land in Prince Edward County is adjacent to Cumberland, Buckingham, Amelia, Appomattox, Nottoway, Charlotte and Lunenburg counties and is located in south-central part of the state in the Piedmont region. The 354-square-mile county is home to 22,950 residents. Farming, logging and retail form the base of the local economy. Prince Edward County farmland encompasses 69,531 acres, and livestock and poultry produce 89% of agricultural sales. Forty percent of the farmland remains in woodlands. Highways in the county include US Highway 460, US Highway 360 and US Highway 15. Prince Edward Gallion State Forest in the southeastern part of the county includes nearly two-thirds of the area with its 6,000 acres. Appomattox and Nottoway rivers lure fishermen to their waters in hope of catching bass, bluegill and catfish. Hunters can bag deer, bears, turkeys and grouse on both public and private lands. Other attractions include High Bridge Trail, Twin Lakes State Parks and Longwood Center for Visual Arts. Prince Edward County Public Schools provide public education for K-12. Longwood University and Hampden-Sydney College offer higher education.
