Land in Montgomery County covers 502 square miles. Located in the Piedmont in the southcentral portion of the state, there are 27,271 residents. Recreation also plays a significant role as it draws visitors to the area. The Uwharrie National Forest has some of the best hunting in the state for those seeking deer and wild turkeys. The Uwharrie is among the earth’s oldest mountain ranges springing up from a chain of volcanoes 500 million years ago. The county has more than 230 miles of shoreline along dams, rivers, streams, reservoirs and three lakes. The waters are home to more than 30 species of fish. Public education is provided to K-12 by Montgomery County Schools, and higher learning is offered at Montgomery Community College.
