Crops include wheat, corn, sweet potatoes and peanuts, and it ranks second in the state in tobacco sales. The Weyerhaeuser Co. and several smaller timber companies own substantial timber stands. The Trent River, one of the world’s oldest rivers, flows west to east through the county. The White Oak River flows along the southern edge of the county and forms the boundary between it and Onslow County. There are several lakes and ponds that have potential for being waterfowl impoundments. Bears, deer and turkeys are plentiful in the area, and fishermen enjoy casting in the waterways. Jones County Schools provides K-12 public education, and Lenior Community College–Jones County offers higher education.
