Chowan County Land and Farms

Chowan County land and farms lure investors and new residents seeking to take advantage of its abundance of agricultural, marine resources, recreational activities and historic landmarks. The land in Chowan County has about 14,000 residents who call the 233-square-mile county home. Farms occupy 53,528 acres of land, 82% of which is used to produce crops and 15% for woodlands. Livestock and poultry account for 17% of agricultural sales, and crops haul in the remaining 85%. The county’s top private employers include Meherrin Agricultural & Chem Co., Colony Tire Corp., Regulator Marine Inc. and Seabrook Ingredients. The Roanoke River meets the Albemarle Sound in historic Edenton, the county seat. The river is widely known to provide some of the best striped bass fishing on the coast. Bear, deer and turkeys are common targets for hunters. In the Atlantic Flyway, waterfowl including Tundra Swans are usually plentiful in the late fall and winter. Some farmers have created impoundments to attract the coveted waterfowl species. Merchants and Bennett’s millponds offer a rare landscape. Accessible only by kayak or canoe, the ancient ecological system includes 1,000-year-old trees. Sailing along the Albemarle was once a necessity for transportation but now is a popular sport.
